Moisture and Temperature

Worms breathe through their skin and require moist conditions. The bedding should feel like a wrung-out sponge—damp but not dripping.

Harvesting Worm Castings

After 3-4 months, the bin will be mostly dark, crumbly castings with few recognizable scraps.

Method 1: Light Harvesting — Dump the bin contents onto a tarp in bright light. Worms burrow away from light. Scrape off castings from the top layer every 20 minutes as worms dive deeper. Return worms to the bin with fresh bedding.

Method 2: Migration Harvesting — Push all contents to one side of the bin. Fill the empty side with fresh bedding and food. Worms migrate to the new food over 2-3 weeks. Harvest the finished side.

Method 3: Screen Harvesting — Use a ¼-inch mesh screen to sift castings. Worms and unfinished material stay on top; finished castings fall through.

Using Worm Castings

Worm castings are so concentrated that a little goes a long way:
